Abstract
Objective: The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is transforming global manufacturing through advanced digital technologies; however, its implementation in developing economies remains constrained by structural and institutional challenges. In Bangladesh, where the electronics sector plays a significant role in economic growth, the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies is hindered by organizational, infrastructural, and regulatory barriers. This study systematically identifies and prioritizes key obstacles to Industry 4.0 implementation in Bangladesh’s electronics industry and proposes effective mitigation strategies.
Methods: An integrated fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework is developed by combining fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) with the fuzzy Comprehensive Distance-Based Ranking (COBRA) method. Expert evaluations and field data were used to examine the causal interrelationships among fourteen critical barriers and to rank six alternative strategies. Data reliability and internal consistency were assessed using dispersion analysis and Cronbach’s alpha. The robustness of the proposed framework was further validated through a comparative analysis with established MCDM techniques, including fuzzy TOPSIS, fuzzy COPRAS, and fuzzy MARCOS, as well as Spearman’s rank correlation.
Results: The findings reveal that inadequate infrastructure, environmental concerns related to energy consumption and electronic waste, and challenges in adopting new business models are the most influential barriers. Regulatory and government support, strategic business alignment, awareness development, and enhanced stakeholder collaboration emerge as the most effective mitigation strategies.
Conclusion: This study presents a novel hybrid MCDM framework that integrates analytical rigor with practical insights, providing policymakers and industry leaders with an evidence-based roadmap for advancing Industry 4.0 adoption in emerging economies.
